Habitar el país que es huésped tanto de HS2 como de COP26 es una rara iniciación entre la ilimitable fatuidad de aquellos que gobiernan; no sólo el gobierno, sino sus cómplices, incluyendo los oponentes nominales, en un delirante consenso de las élites. La lección del Brexit ha sido ya olvidada; los gases de efecto invernadero se les fueron a sus embotadas y privilegiadas cabezas; totalmente dispuestos a toda gobernanza como imposición de arriba hacia abajo.

Aún la sede elegida por este circo de demonización del carbón testifica la falta de contacto con la realidad por parte de sus organizadores. ¿A quién se le puede ocurrir que puede ser una buena idea elegir Glasgow como la ciudad anfitriona? El único racional concebible detrás de la decisión es una aspiración de hospitalidad para hacer sentir a los delegados del Tercer Mundo como si estuvieran en su casa. Las montañas de basura sin recolectar, la infestación de ratas y las huelgas al estilo de los años '70 son las características de esta ciudad bajo el gobierno del SNP (Partido Nacionalista Escocés), apoyado por los verdes delirantes. Parece un lugar implausible como plataforma de lanzamiento para el ascenso a un futuro más limpio y más ecológicamente puro. El jefe del Consejo Deliberante de Glasgow, sin embargo, ha imputado las razones de los problemas de Glasgow a Margaret Thatcher.

Glasgow es también la primera en experimentar las consecuencias del COP26. La ciudad ya es la capital del COVID de uno de los países más golpeados en Europa. La clase política creyó conveniente meter 25.000 personas provenientes de más de 150 países, algunos de ellos con programas de vacunación mal diseñados, que presumiblemente acarrean otras variantes del virus. Han exceptuado a todos estos innecesarios viajeros de los requisitos de vacunación que son forzados sobre cualquier hombre de negocios que traiga inversiones.

Aún los fantasiosos a cargo de esta extravagancia conceden que la reunión traerá un "pico" de COVID, un resultado que ven con ecuanimidad. Pero no hay algo como un "pico" que no acarree más muertes. En lenguaje llano, algunas personas perderán sus vidas porque una colección de pomposos políticos y obsesivos climáticos quieren darse el gusto de una orgía de señalamiento virtuoso. No les importa. Lastimar, aunque más no sea la autoestima del hombre de la calle, en los ojos de los jefes políticos, es desestimable.

Ese principio va mucho más allá de las consecuencias epidemiológicas del COP26; su razón principal es entronizar la religión de Cero Neto  como una ortodoxia global, su prédica de total subordinación de todas las preocupaciones humanas - crecimiento económico, mejoras de los niveles de vida, confort personal, viajes de placer, incluso el asado de los domingos - a una creencia fanática en una destrucción inminente y apocalíptica  y someter al estado poderes irrestrictos para contrarrestar esta amenaza imaginaria.

Esto puede ser el Gran Uno. Realmente puede serlo. El COP26 tiene el potencial de provocar una revolución, no como evento sino como el principio de un proceso. No con certeza y no en el futuro inmediato; pero a medida que se despliega el totalitarismo del cambio climático, ya delineado con cierta claridad en los planes de los gobiernos, es un fenómeno que cualquiera con conocimientos históricos podrá identificar como una concebible causa de revolución a largo plazo. ¿Qué forma podría tomar semejante revolución? Está por verse. Si será puramente política o violenta. Probablemente variará según la cultura de cada sociedad en la que ocurra. Si los políticos no prestan atención a las señales de advertencia que eventualmente proliferarán, los historiadores futuros pueden llegar a comparar la reunión del COP26 con la convención de los Estados Generales en Francia en 1789.

Con el COP26 es necesario distinguir entre la reacción de corto plazo y las consecuencias de largo plazo. Aún si el encuentro degenerara, aún en sus propios términos, en una farsa, lo peor que puede provocar es mofa. Los augurios no son buenos. Xi Jinping, líder de la nación responsable del 28% de las emisiones con efecto invernadero, en comparación con Gran Bretaña que produce solamente el 1%, no va a estar presente; está demasiado ocupado reabriendo viejas minas de carbón para satisfacer las necesidades energéticas de su país. Le quedará a Boris presentarse como el salvador del planeta, ganándose porotos con su esposa al prometer miles de millones de libras imaginarias para sus fútiles y tiránicos proyectos verdes.

La payasada sobre el escenario improbablemente empujará a las calles a turbas armadas con guadañas y horcas. El tiempo de probarlo vendrá después. Si el Reino Unido soporta un invierno con cortes de energía, faltantes, muertes por hipotermia y consecuencias de pérdida de productividad y crecimiento - todo, como el público bien sabe, innecesario y debido al abandono de fuentes de energía confiables por imposiciones de los virtuosos señaladores compulsivos - la opinión pública, que es volátil, podrá volverse contra el evangelismo verde.

Si los autos a motor a combustión son prohibidos en favor de vehículos eléctricos impagables y poco confiables, si los hogares se ven forzados a cambiar sus conocidos calentadores a gas por  eléctricos absurdamente caros y de bajo rendimiento, junto con una multitud de mezquinos acosos, si continúan las imposiciones financieras y la gradual caída de los niveles de vida, lo único que podrá evitar la revolución, de cualquier clase, será la velocidad con la que la clase política sepa retractarse de esta política kamikaze. De todas formas, como vimos con el Brexit, una retirada elegante no está en el ADN de la actual élite y ésa es la razón por la cual no se puede descartar una respuesta extrema.

Si es así, realmente será el Gran Uno, siendo la tiranía climática lo que finalmente destrone a la clase política ya sacudida por el Brexit. En años recientes, el axioma principal entre los comentaristas políticos había sido la peligrosa grieta que separaba las élites gobernantes de los gobernados. Ahora la fisura es aún más ancha y no sólo por el tema del clima. Es el epítome  de la privilegiada clase media Guardianista liberal que clama: "no me preocupa pagar impuestos más altos si beneficia [acá permutar por cualquier causa bienpensante]", sin importarle los efectos que dichas políticas pueden tener sobre la gente más pobre que habita el mundo real.

¿Y todo para qué? La tierra se ha calentado 1ºC desde la era preindustrial. Ciertamente es algo para tomar en consideración, mientras se trata, neutralmente y con calma, de analizar todas las posibles consecuencias. Si, como se alega, los gases de efecto invernadero contribuyen a mayor calentamiento, averiguar cuál es la composición del efecto invernadero. Los alarmistas sostienen que el CO2, tanto natural como hecho por el hombre, es responsable de 72,3% del efecto invernadero. Pero ese cálculo excluye el mayor componente del efecto, el vapor de agua, que es responsable del 95%.

Cuando se analizan la totalidad de los gases que producen el efecto invernadero, el CO2 justifica sólo el 3,6% de todo el efecto, del cual sólo el 4% es generado por la actividad humana; los alarmistas sostienen que es el 29%. Eso es inmaterial. Eliminar el 29% del 3,6% del efecto invernadero muy difícilmente tenga alguna consecuencia. Cuando el vapor de agua es tomado en cuenta (¿y por qué no lo sería, cuando es el mayor componente del efecto invernadero?), si todas las naciones del mundo lograran Cero Neto mañana, el resultado sería eliminar el 0,14% del 1,04% del efecto invernadero. ¿Vale la pena mendigar a todo el mundo y retrasar el desarrollo de la Humanidad?

Políticamente, este tema es altamente significativo. La realidad es que, aún si la "emergencia" climática (y la evidencia no sugiere que lo sea), no hay ninguna respuesta práctica para evitarlo. En cuanto al significativo, pero no catastrófico calentamiento que pueda llegar a ocurrir, cada nación deberá buscar sus mejoras apropiadas que la protejan para cada situación: en GB, significa invertir fuertemente en defensas contra las inundaciones. Del resto, algunas de las consecuencias son benevolentes.

Lo cual hace que no tenga sentido la ofensiva fanática por el Cero Neto. La frase en sí mismas abunda en prescripciones absolutistas emanadas de fanáticos de izquierda: fueron ellos los que primero armaron expresiones como "tolerancia cero". Parece que el Partido Conservado [británico] está dispuesto a cometer un suicidio electoral sobre este tema extravagantemente no-conservador, persiguiendo el aumento del poder del estado. Otras instituciones está cortejando desastres similares: el Príncipe de Gales anunció en marzo del 2009 que el mundo estaba a 100 meses de prevenir un desastre climático irreversible. Eso quiere decir que debería haberse producido en julio de 2017. Sin embargo, el pasado fin de semana nos advertía de "estamos ante una peligrosamente estrecha ventana de oportunidad" para salvar el planeta.

El Duque de Cambridge fue reclutado para la cruzada del COP26: está extremadamente mal asesorado. Presumiblemente los asesores reales han calculado que, desde el momento en que el tema climático no pertenece puramente al mundo de la política partidaria, es seguro para dos futuros reyes pontificar sobre lo que, en poco tiempo, será el tema más contencioso de la vida pública. Si la clase política ciegamente persigue la agenda de Cero Neto, consecuentemente provocando una reacción volcánica, las cosas irán muy mal para cualquiera identificado con el régimen opresivo. Sólo el silencio de la Reina ha siempre preservado de estos temas controvertidos a los miembros de la familia real.

Otras instituciones han perdido cualquier credibilidad hace mucho. En el 2007 la BBC predijo que el Ártico estaría sin casquete helado en el 2013: en el otoño de ese año, el volumen del hielo ártico se había incrementado en un tercio. Hay gran cantidad de yamanes, charlatanes y Hombres de la Quinta Monarquía tratando de robar con el COP26.

Lo que ninguno de ellos podrá predecir es el latigazo que inevitablemente provocarán con su extravagante obsesión religiosa del Cero Neto, que incluso podrá anunciar el inicio de un nuevo orden político.

In the entire annals of human folly, it is difficult to find a contender to rival the charade called COP26. It is a festival of establishment groupthink on supposed climate “disaster”, designed to proclaim the final triumph of the Net Zero cult and to signal the beginning of the serious economic auto-destruction deemed a necessary sacrifice to appease the great Moloch of anthropogenic global warming.

To inhabit the country hosting both HS2 and COP26 is a rare initiation into the illimitable fatuity of those who govern – not merely the government, but all its accomplices, including nominal opponents, in the delusional elite consensus. The lesson of Brexit has been forgotten already; the heady greenhouse gas of entitlement has befogged minds constitutionally disposed to regard all governance as a top-down imposition.

Even the venue chosen for this carbon-demonising circus testifies to its organisers’ detachment from reality. Who thought it was a good idea to select Glasgow as the host city? The only conceivable rationale behind such a decision is a hospitable aspiration to make delegates from Third World countries feel at home. The mountains of uncollected rubbish, the rat infestation and the 1970s-style strikes that characterise a city under the rule of the SNP, supported by Green loons, seems an implausible launch-pad for an ascent to a cleaner, ecologically purer future. The leader of Glasgow City Council, however, has unhesitatingly identified the cause of Glasgow’s malaise as Margaret Thatcher.

Glasgow is also likely to experience the first consequences of COP26. The city is already the Covid capital of one of the worst stricken countries in Europe. The political class thinks it helpful to funnel into one city 25,000 people from more than 200 countries, some of them with ill-developed vaccination programmes, presumably carrying every variant of the virus, and to exempt these wholly unnecessary travellers from the vaccination requirements that would be imposed upon a businessman bringing inward investment.

Even the fantasists running this extravaganza concede the gathering will probably result in a Covid “spike”, an outcome they view with equanimity. But there is no such thing as a Covid spike that does not involve additional deaths. In plain language, some people will lose their lives because a collection of grandstanding politicians and climate obsessives want to indulge in an orgy of virtue signalling. They don’t care. Hurtful though it may be to the self-esteem of the man in the street, in the eyes of his political masters he is expendable.

That principle obtains far beyond any epidemiological consequences of COP26: its core purpose, to enthrone the religion of Net Zero as a global orthodoxy, is predicated upon the total subordination of all human concerns – economic growth, increased living standards, personal comfort, leisure travel, even the traditional Sunday roast – to a fanatical belief in imminent apocalyptic destruction and the surrender to the state of unrestricted powers to counter this imagined threat.

This could be the Big One. It actually could. COP26, not as an event but as the beginning of a process, has the potential to provoke revolution. Not certainly and not in the immediate future; but the unfolding future of climate totalitarianism, already fairly clearly delineated in the plans of governments, is the one phenomenon that anyone with an historian’s insight will identify as a conceivable long-term cause of revolution. What shape such a revolution might take, whether purely political or violent, would probably vary according to the culture of any society in which it occurred. If politicians do not heed the warning signs that will eventually proliferate, future historians may compare the assembling of COP26 to the convening of the Estates General in France, in 1789.

With COP26 it is necessary to distinguish between the short-term reaction and the long-term consequences. Although the meeting could well degenerate, even on its own terms, into a farce, the worst that it  would provoke is derision. The auguries are not good. Xi Jinping, leader of the nation responsible for 28 per cent of greenhouse emissions, to Britain’s one per cent, will not be attending: he is too busy taking old coal mines out of mothballs to meet his country’s energy needs. It will be left to Boris to posture as saviour of the planet, earning brownie points from his wife by pledging trillions of imaginary pounds to futile and tyrannical green projects.

The buffoonery on-stage will hardly bring mobs out onto the streets armed with scythes and pitchforks. The testing time will come later. If Britain endures a winter of power cuts, shortages, deaths from hypothermia and consequent loss of productivity and growth – all, as the public well knows, unnecessary and due to the virtue-signalling abandonment of reliable energy sources – fickle public opinion might well turn sour on green evangelism.

But if petrol-powered cars are banned in favour of unaffordable and unreliable electric vehicles, and householders are compelled to exchange their reliable gas boilers for absurdly expensive and under-performing electric pumps, along with a multitude of other petty harassments, financial impositions and a gradual decline in living standards, then the only thing that might avert revolution, of whatever kind, would be the speed with which the political class retreats from this kamikaze policy. However, as we saw with Brexit, graceful withdrawal is not in the DNA of the current elite and that is why an extreme outcome cannot entirely be ruled out.

If so, this would indeed be the Big One, with climate tyranny the issue that finally dethroned a political class already shaken by Brexit. In recent years, the chief axiom among political commentators has been the dangerous chasm separating the governing elites from the governed. Nowhere is that fissure wider than on the issue of climate. It epitomises the entitlement of the middle-class Guardianista liberal claiming “I don’t mind paying higher taxes if it benefits [permutate any bien-pensant cause],” heedless of the effects of any policy on poorer people inhabiting the real world.

And what is this all about? The earth has warmed by up to 1°C since the pre-industrial age. Certainly that is something to take into consideration, while trying, neutrally and calmly, to assess its possible consequences. If, as claimed, greenhouse gases are contributing to likely further warming, what is the composition of the greenhouse effect. Alarmists claim that Co2, both natural and man-made, is responsible for 72.3 per cent of the greenhouse effect. But that calculation excludes the largest component of the greenhouse effect, water vapour, accounting for around 95 per cent.

When the totality of greenhouse gases is assessed, Co2 accounts for only 3.6 per cent of the greenhouse effect, of which just 4 per cent is generated by human activity; alarmists claim that figure is 29 per cent. That is immaterial: eliminating 29 per cent of 3.6 per cent of the greenhouse effect would hardly have significant consequences. When water vapour is factored in (and why would it not be, when it is the largest part of the greenhouse effect?), if every nation on earth achieved Net Zero tomorrow, the  result would be to eliminate between 0.14 per cent and 1.04 per cent of the greenhouse effect. Is that outcome worth beggaring the world and setting back human development?

Politically, this issue is hugely significant. The reality is that, even if there is a climate “emergency” (and the evidence does not suggest there is), there is no practical global response to avert it. As regards the significant, but not catastrophic, warming that is likely to occur, each nation must look to the protective ameliorations appropriate to its particular situation: in Britain, that means investing in widespread flood defences. Otherwise, some of the consequences might actually be benevolent.

What makes no sense is the fanatical drive for Net Zero. The phrase itself is redolent of the absolutist prescriptions of leftist fanatics: it was they who first coined such expressions as “zero tolerance”. It seems the Conservative Party is resolved to commit electoral suicide over this extravagantly un-Tory issue, pursuing the extension of state power. Other institutions are similarly courting disaster: the Prince of Wales announced in March, 2009 that the world had just 100 months to prevent irreversible climate disaster. That meant the jig should have been up by July, 2017. Yet last weekend HRH was now warning of “a dangerously narrow window of opportunity” to save the planet.

The Duke of Cambridge has been recruited into the COP26 crusade: this is extremely ill-advised. Presumably royal advisers have calculated that, since climate issues do not belong purely in the realm of party politics, it is safe for two future kings to pontificate on what, before long, will be the most contentious issue in public life. If the political class purblindly pursues its hair-shirt Net Zero policy, ultimately provoking a volcanic reaction, things will go badly for anyone identified with that oppressive regime. Only the silence the Queen has always preserved on controversial issues is a safe policy for members of the royal family.

Other institutions have long lost any credibility. In 2007 the BBC predicted the Arctic would be ice-free by the summer of 2013: in the autumn of that year, the volume of Arctic ice increased by a third. There will be plenty of such shamans, charlatans and Fifth Monarchy Men capering at COP26. What none of them are likely to predict is the backlash that will inevitably be provoked by their extravagant religious obsession with Net Zero, which could also herald a new political order.
